Workshop on hyperspectral remote sensing of water
Using new remote sensing data to quantify and track changes in water composition

Course Outline:
The workshop provides a basic introduction on how to get, and use, satellite remote sensing data looking at New Zealand’s coastal and inland waters.
Specifically, we will access data from:
HICO --- http://hico.coas.oregonstate.edu,
and
MERIS --- http://earth.esa.int/EOLi/EOLi.html.
Basic (multispectral) water remote sensing will be covered with standard products and tools such as:
ESA’s BEAM VISAT: http://www.brockmann-consult.de/cms/web/beam/ software/
The more advanced sections of the workshop will describe methods for analyzing hyperspectral data from HICO, mostly using codes written in MATLAB.
Provisional outline:
Day 1: Introduction of satellite remote sensing of coastal and in-land waters of New Zealand
09:00-10:00 Introduction to water remote sensing over New Zealand
10:30-11:30 Where to get data, and standard tools for image and product generation.
Day 2: Hyperspectral remote sensing of New Zealand waters using HICO
09:00-10:00 Getting HICO data into and out of MATLAB (Atmospheric correction, Chlorophyll Product Algorithms).
10:30-11:30 Research Methods using Hyperspectral data (Derivative Spectroscopy, Sparse Dictionary Learning, ...).
Day 3: Projects of Interest
9:00 --- 11:30 Each participant can work on ‘special projects’ of their choosing, presumably a water body where they have on-going or future research interest.

NOTE:
Participants should bring their own laptop computers for workshop exercises. The more detailed exercises will be demonstrated with ‘MATLAB’, so a working copy of MATLAB --- or an ability to translated very rapidly to a language of your choice (e.g. python) is also recommended to get the most out of the workshop.
